Probably not. The battery case is connected to the frame which should be the ultimate ground. Now if there was a power(+) short to the case and the case is shorted to ground, then you have a path for leakage.
The long term concern is to prevent the bare ground wire from eventually breaking open (tape it good if you don't replace it).
I guess you recharged the battery and found that it did hold a charge?
